The Welcome Back Whittlesey Big Bash 2021 organised on behalf of Whittlesey Sports Association was a huge success on Sunday at the Manor Field.
The day started with seven Church services all focusing their thoughts and prayers on the day. At noon there was a Royal British Legion Service celebrating 100 years of the RBL at the War Memorial with special guests The High Sheriff of Cambridgeshire Mrs Caroline Bewes DL, The Rt Hon Stephen Barclay MP, The Mayor of Whittlesey Cllr David Mason, Chairman of Fenland District Council Alex Miscandlon and Miss Lucy Parker who won the honour to be a VIP of the Day. The guests were all transported to the Manor Field in Classic vehicles for the official opening. At the field there was a further 100 vehicles ranging from an US police car to hot rods and classic bikes. Mayor Cllr Mason officially opened the afternoon event welcoming the stalls, public and many sporting activities including the very popular fishing provided by the Angling Trust (over 100 taking part) Archery and Rifle shooting and many more. The musicians Kill Me Kate, James Edmunds and The Boatmen entertained throughout the afternoon supported by Young Technicians .
Spitfire Flyover
At 3.15pm Squadron Leader Mark Sugden flew and circled over Whittlesey in a Spitfire enthralling the crowds as the Battle of Britain Music played over the speakers. Mrs Bewes presented certificates to youngsters who excelled by presenting on the Fenland Youth Radio Breakfast Show. A further surprise presentation was made to event organiser Robert Windle was an award made by the High Sheriff in recognition of his outstanding service to young people through his dedication and commitment to Fenland Youth Radio and contribution in enhancing the life of the community of Whittlesey and beyond. In the Conference Hall there was a Golden Age Fair organised by Asley Godfrey of Fenland District Council followed by a disco where over 100 young family members were dancing to music provided by DJ Chris Osler and DJ L.I.AM of Vibes Disco and Fenland Youth Radio.
Event organiser Rob Windle thanked all the helpers some of whom were at the venue from 7am and not leaving until 7pm , the companies who supported the day, Fenland District Council Isobel Edgington and Simon Bell whose experience ensured the event crossed the line as a great event and enjoyed by all. Further support was by the European Regional Fund which ensured every activity and event on the day was free of charge.
