Now that the evenings are getting darker earlier, more people risk suffering with depression. Seasonal depression is a real thing, and it’s beneficial to make adjustments before it takes hold.
Loneliness, isolation and darkness affect people’s moods and wellbeing. Getting out of the house, during daylight hours if possible, to get some fresh air and to see people (even if you don’t always wish to have a conversation) can make so much difference to your wellbeing.
Exercise not only increases blood flow to the brain, but it also releases endorphins – the body’s very own natural antidepressant. In addition, it releases other neurotransmitters, like serotonin, which is a feel-good hormone.
Many people believe that boxing or aggressive exercise is the best form of antidepressant. In fact, research shows that any type of cardiovascular exercise is most beneficial. Choose something that raises your heart rate enough to affect your breathing, but not necessarily enough to wear you out completely. So, turn that walk into a brisk walk. Take the stairs instead of the escalator. Hand whisk the mixture you are preparing instead of using an electric mixer.
You might not ‘see’ a difference, but the effect of the seasonal change might not be quite so severe this year. Give it a go – what have you got to lose?
Good luck, and be well.
If you are feeling lonely or depressed, please talk to someone. Don’t suffer alone.
