Since the summer of 2020, Eboracum Baroque have had the privilege of performing at the idyllic Orchard Tea Garden in Grantchester. Previous outdoor performances at the Orchard Tea Garden have included Handel’s Acis and Galatea and Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas to sold out audiences. They return in 2022 with an exciting programme across three days in June. Chris Parsons, Artistic Director of Eboracum Baroque says ‘We’re delighted to be return to such a wonderful venue and we’re very grateful to the tea rooms for allowing these performances. There’s something for everyone from baroque favourites on the Friday night and one of Purcell’s greatest works, King Arthur packed full of great tunes on the Saturday.’

BAROQUE IN THE ORCHARD- ‘COFFEE CANTATA’ – Thursday 9th June 2022, Orchard Tea Garden, Grantchester, 7:30pm

The first concert features Bach’s Coffee Cantata alongside instrumental music by TelemannBach and Vivaldi as we recreate one of Bach’s coffee concerts in Cafe Zimmermann in Leipzig.

Bach’s Coffee Cantata, is a comedic piece depicting the rise of the coffee house in 18th- century Germany and addictions to coffee at this time. It follows the story of the frustrated Herr Schlendrian (Jamie Woollard) and his daughter, Lieschen (Elen Lloyd Roberts) who is addicted to coffee! He attempts to stop her coffee drinking but she remains defiant and sings of her love of caffeine. This is the closest Bach came to writing an opera and it is presented in a comedic form.

BAROQUE IN THE ORCHARD ‘BAROQUE CLASSICS’ – Friday 10th June 2022, Orchard Tea Garden, Grantchester, 7:30pm

Baroque Classics in the Orchard features works by Handel, Purcell and Vivaldi including operatic arias, concertos and instrumental suites. This varied programme will highlight some baroque gems but also include some lesser known works that deserve to be heard more.

Featuring Soprano, Elen Lloyd Roberts and Tenor, Gareth Edmunds accompanied by period instruments.

BAROQUE IN THE ORCHARD – KING ARTHUR – Saturday 11th June 2022, Orchard Tea Garden, Grantchester, 7:30pm

Their final performance features a concert version of one of Henry Purcell’s greatest works, King Arthur. This patriotic opera is packed full of great tunes from battle cries from the chorus and trumpets tunes through to the shivering ‘Cold Song’ and the iconic ‘Fairest Isle’.
We perform this work with just 9 singers acting as both the soloists and chorus accompanied by an orchestra of strings, oboes, recorders and trumpet. It features a vast array of characters from evil magicians, soldiers, amorous shepherds, drunken peasants and mythical beings.
